Hi Gary and all!
Perhaps Yaesu perceives that most users do not require 200 watts output,
class "A" operation, or an external power supply (of a voltage not commonly
used in ham equipment). By using an internal supply with 12 volt PA's in the
"Field", the cost (and weight) can be cut significantly, while offering
close to the same performance as the higher priced MKV "Base". It also could
easily allow operation from an external 12 volt source (supply/battery). If
you look at the competition, this rig makes perfect sense. While all
companies have active forward looking R&D departments (or should), the
investment in the MKV will run a bit longer than suggested, if one uses
Yaesu's past track record as a guide. They do love to squeeze the most out
of a production design! Don't get me wrong, I love my MKV! I would love to
have the next generation Yaesu DSP rig, but I think we will have a bit of a
longer wait until that day arrives. It would buy the new rig tomorrow if it
were available. I hope you are right about a forthcoming new rig, I just
would not hold my breath.

                                  73,
                                  George K5JZ
