[1000mp] IF-notch in the MP

Amen to that criticism about the MP's notch. Mine is rarely used because
it's so broad.

When I first got my (used) MP, it seemed to me that the notch didn't work at
all. And indeed I think it was mis-adjusted. I actually sent it to Yaesu
to have it fixed (along with a couple of other little things). But the
notch repair was the main reason I sent it in. I was really looking forward
to using the high-Q notch in CW mode. The narrow-looking notch spectrum
plot sketch in the owner's manual was very enticing. Too bad it was only an
artist's sketch, not a measured band-reject plot.

When I got the rig back from Yaesu, they said they found the notch was
indeed out of alignment, and they had fixed it back up to factory standards.
But as Arie says, it's not very deep, and it's so wide as to be virtually
useless for any narrow band work, such as CW (is there any other true
mode?). It might be useful for SSB stuff, where your desired signal is
broad compared to the signal you want to notch out.

So, yes, we should look for the next Inrad mod -- the "IF Notch Upgrade." I
would buy it for sure, if it was a tunable notch that was 100 Hz. wide (down
6dB) and 200 Hz wide (down 60 dB). These are just numbers off the top of
the head, but maybe a good starting point for a discussion of the "wish
list" notch.

73,
Tom / W7GT
