I'm not familiar with Wes Hayward's book, but that's how it's done in the
K2.  The output of the 2nd xtal filter is fed into the mixer part of a
Gilbert-cell mixer/oscillator/product detector using an SA602AN (or
SA612AN) IC.  The other part of the SA602AN is the VXO xtal oscillator
(BFO).
