Bob,
All radios have problems. No manufacturer is exempt [just check out the
latest qst with an article on how to fix the sorry audio in the wunderkind
Icom pro and pro2]. When the original mp came out people were complaining
about them too. A reflector such as this lets you hear more about problems
with a radio than years of listening on the air. How many guys on this
reflector haven't had any problems with the MP or the Mark 5? You don't
often hear about this--just the bad ones.
Check out a Ten Tec or Kenwood reflector--same stories, different
players.
My only rule [which I don't always follow] is too wait a year
before buying a new model. Let the bugs get fixed. I wouldn't apply this to
a Mark 5. It is an update, not a whole new radio.
I owned a late MP and a recent Mark 5 Field. Both were great--stock and
no problems.
