I think you misunderstand. My Vaio only has a USB port, no serial or 
parallel port. To get a serial port I have to use a USB to serial port 
converter. That is the piece of kit that is giving problems, not a 9 pin 
to 9 pin adaptor.

One final bit. For the Belkin converter I cannot just use a DB9 lead 
wired with just pins 2,3  and 5. It only works with the full 9 pins 
wired (I haven't tried omitting any yet).
