Lou,
is it not paradoxical that only the Big Three (and JRC) have had the guts to
embrace solid-state amateur HF amplifier technology, stick with it and
develop it - whilst the amplifier manufacturers on this side of the Pacific
are still lost in the thermionic past.
One cannot help drawing the parallel of Fuji Film, which took an early lead
in digital photography (as compared to Kodak, which appears still to have
difficulty realising that the days of chemical photography are numbered).
What makes the paradox even greater is that all the semiconductors used in
these marvellous new technologies were first developed in U.S. research
laboratories.
I drive a Yaesu Quadra with an Icom IC-756Pro II. The choice of a
solid-state amplifier was easy for me - a near-fatal encounter with a
4CW10,000A at CERN in 1968 made the decision very easy. I feel a lot more
comfortable around 50V than 3 kV.
