Hi Garry
No dont turn the mic gain off, you need to disconnect your microphone if it shorts out the mic input when not in use (receive) most do. Then with your psk in transmit your mic gain and sound card output (also leave the power control at full out)levels will control the power out of your radio.
This is where a lot of people go wrong, it only takes a small signal from the soundcard (millivolts) to drive the radio, so keep the soundcard level low, I use a 10,000 to one attenuator in line from the soundcard to radio and still have the soundcard levels pretty low. Its very easy to overdrive the mic preamp is any radio and once that occurs you have distortion and will be transmitting a poor broad signal no matter what power level your running.
My mic level is about the same as it would be using my mic for ssb and that way I know Im not (hopefully) overdriving the radio. And with someone where each of your have a good stronge signal get a IMD report.
Good Luck and 73 Morris WA4MIT
