Phillip,
I get very good, unsolicited audio reports with my Heil HC-5, which, as you
probably know, is a $30 element. I have several Heils, including the HM-10
desk mic on a boom anchored to the desk; it has both the HC-4 and HC-5
elements and a switch.
For my voice, the HC-5 was the one of choice, based on my boring a couple of
friends who endured my going through all of the combinations of menu and
mic/proc settings. The menu items are 4-4, 5-9, 7-7, and four within 8-9.
They all are essential in tailoring the mic performance to you and your
operating.
I also tried my old Shure 444D (fair) and the standard Yaesu desk mic (high
emphasis on, low cut off), which was very good, but takes up space on the
desk. I also have boom headsets with the HC-4 and HC-5, so I satisfied
myself that the HC-5 was for me, unless I'm desperate in a pileup and want
the HC-4.

I also have considered buying one for myself, but I'm like you I can't see
paying that much for a mic.
I have heard several on the air and most had a great sound if they were not
going through all the outboard consoles and processing from external units.
Most of the best sounding rigs were sent directly to the rig. The audio was
smooth and very clear, not the bass pumping audio heard around the bands.
But that is only my opinion, because everyone has their own opinion.
If money is the object, why pay $150-$200 for a speaker, $1000-$5000 for an
amplifier. I guess it's something to think about when you make a purchase.
Still undecided,
Phillip KB4I
