Pete,

I would guess that you have selected the "Tuned" pre-amplifier from menu
8-4. This option will reduce front end amplification on lower bands (7 MHz
and below) and increase on higher bands (24 MHz and above) when compared to
"Flat". There are actually three different pre-amplifier circuits which will
be selected depending on the band and option used. If you select the "Flat"
pre-amplifier you will not notice any change in the noise level when
crossing from ham band to general. It seems that MP will use the "Flat"
pre-amplifier always when in general bands.

Well, at least my old MP functions this way - I do not have any experience
about MK5.
