[1000mp] Question about MP, Mark V & Field construction technique

I've  worked on 2 MP's and 2 Mark V's.  So far, on all four radio's, I
noticed that on the ends of all seven control shafts along the
bottom row of the front panel (under the knobs), there is a small
strip of metalized film tape stuck on the ends of the shafts.  I'm
just curious why these are there.  I thought it might be just to keep
the knobs from vibrating off, but the knobs fit very tight without the
tape.  Any ideas?
