That's exactly how I've been controlling the power output of my MP to
drive my Alpha 76CA.  No problems at all, (it takes about 45 watts to
drive the amp to 1200 watts out) and if I want to run barefoot with 100
watts, I don't have to mess around with changing the menu item.
