Nope, I think Earl was right, at least on the spacing.  It's true that a
couple I spotchecked do coincide with points where the ATU "wait" light
comes on, which makes me think they may be something more than just
harmonics of a clock.  But they continue every 81.9 kHz throughout the
entire tuning range of the radio (outside the ham bands as well), which
precludes the ATU tuning/RX muted explanation.
