Hi John
In my estimation the power made a bigger difference than you might
think. I work a lot of JT65 and have noticed that only a few watts can
make a
big difference in making a contact and not being heard and I am not
talking about doubling the power I mean like 5 watts or less say going
from 20 to 25 watts. So doubling the power could make a huge difference
at the other end. Just my opinion.

You get some RF envelope control with a fast ALC holding back the peaks
without causing the splatter of clipping without post clipping filtering.

I'd look at the RF envelope with a scope and see which rigs you have on
hand produce a greater averaage power while keeping the peak power to
the peak power rating of the output stages.

One of the variables on the 857D standard microphone is there is a
switch on the back to change the LF rolloff frequency by changing the
value of a coupling capacitor. And the DSP in the 857D allows for
adjusting the transmit audio response to emphasize certain frequencies
if they get more punch from your voice.
