At mods.dk look for FT857 mods for extended transmit or MARS. In the
threads there is one about marine but it doesn't say much and you can
only read one per day for free. One thread title suggests its possible
to do by the CAT cable and software.
The extended discussion at:
www.worldwidedx.com/threads/yaesu-ft-857d-ft-897d-857-897-frequency-modification-expansion.28511/
shows its a bit problematic and that its important to hold certain
buttons in the reset process after doing jumper mods. The mod seems to
depend
on the year of manufacture as well as the area for which it was shipped,
especially US vs EU.
Google "VHF transmit expansion FT857" (without the quotes) for a large
number of discussions and suggestions.
In the US such a use would be illegal except for emergency conditions
because the radio hasn't been certified for operation under the marine
rules. Its only been type approved for use in the ham bands. I've
noticed receive sensitivity drops off on VHF out of the ham bands also.
My 857s haven't been modified for frequency coverage but one might get
it done some day for greater versatility when used for a microwave IF.
