Hi Dale,

Yesterday I sent you a note about repairs using my cell phone. Today I was
able to search the internet for the "guy" who used to do the repairs on the
high-end Yaesu radios, and he is Byron Campbell, WA4GEG. His website is at:
http://www.hamradiobug.com/repairfacts.html I now notice that he is
limiting himself to only working on the FT-1000MP series of radios, but your
problem seems to be a simple one not requiring display and other front panel
changes, so, If you email him and discuss your problem with him he then may
decide to fix it for you. wa4geg at HAMRadioBug.com is his email address.

I own a FT-990AT radio, the baby brother of your radio, and I recently
purchased an FT-3000D which I am in love with. Several years ago my FT-990
sat in my Ham Radio Barn for a few years without my attending to its needs,
then I tried to transmit with the radio and only could muster 25 watts of
output power. Well the fellow above would not touch a lowly FT-990, so I
ended up sending it to a repair service guy in the Chicago area. That
fellow is: Jack (WA9FVP) at Willco Electronics web page:
http://www.willcoele.com/radio_repair/index.html Well jack managed to get
the radio working again for me but upon its return the "S" Meter no longer
functioned. For some reason he added a diode in the radio's circuit, which
may have messed-up the AGC. Then... I rationalized myself into thinking
that I had my 100 Watts back, and it was driving my amplifier okay, and that
599 was all we give out when making DX contacts, and, in the early days we
never has S-meters.... So, I never complained to him about this small
problem. All in all it cost me over $300.00 for the repair with the cost of
shipping the radio via UPS being around $75.00 each way.

BTY: I too will be 73 in June, and I understand the problems.
