Says it shouldn't be used with a FT-950 because the pin out is wrong.

Probably the filters are set enabled and there's no power or the filters 
are not enabled and the bypass is left open.

then if the cable was modified for the FT-950 it might be that it 
shorted the power to the microphone in the FT-1000MP and a protective 
circuit kicked in to keep from damaging that power source and the 
protective circuit has a long time constant.
