[Yaesu] FT-980 question

I have an FT-980 which works perfectly with one exception.  When it's in the AM mode and I adjust the carrier level (with the drive control) in transmit for, say, 25 Watts, and then go to receive and then back to transmit, the carrier level is never where I set it earlier.  It may be lower or it may be higher but I've never seen it be the same.  I have not gone through the schematic in detail to determine what feedback mechanisms may be in place to assist with maintaining a certain power level nor do I even know what the drive level pot actually controls but I am puzzled by this behavior and am curious if any FT-980 owner/operators experience the same phenomenon
