[Yaesu] FT-60R 400-500 MHz mod?

Anyone done the 400-500 MHz FT-60R mod with a US radio and had it WORK?

I did the MARS/CAP mod, no problem, but a bit dismayed that it left major
chunks of spectrum out, unlike the FT-50 that opened up from roughly 120-510 
MHz.

A quick search on the web revealed a 400-500 MHz mod on numerous sites by
removing a second resistor right next to the MARS/CAP resistor, common with
many radios.

Removing this resulted in a dead radio!

I took the entire FT-60 apart thinking I cracked a trace since there was no
power.

While playing around, I shunted the pads where the resistor was and the
radio turned back on, seems it looks for this part during start up.

Worse yet, it didn't expand anything.

Bogus mod?
