[Yaesu] FT736 6 meter module Noise

A friend of mine has a 736 with a 6 meter module that is giving him problems.When attaching any kind of antenna the S-meter goes to half scale and the receiver if real dumb.  Take the antenna off and the meter goes to zero.  A six inch piece of wire on the antenna socket will do the same thing.   It will pick up signals from a local 6 meter rig---on the same dest and on a dummy load..  The two and 432 modules work fine.
 
The interal PS has been by passed and and run off a regular DC linear supply so that is not they typical PS animal rearing is spikey ulgy head.. 
 
It almost seems like the front end of the 6 mtr module is going into oscilation.  
 
Any body had any simialr experience or good ideas.  Appreciate any help.
