[Yaesu] VOX switching 1000D??

I have the DIN cable that works with audio in and audio out for my Ten Tec Argonaut V. 
It allows the rig to be switched....with VOX so only the in and out tones are required.

The Yaesu 1000D has the same connection, labelled "packet". So, I moved the cable from the Ten Tec to the yaesu. 

It will only work when the MOX button is pressed....so my guess is that this input does not go through the VOX circuit. 

Other than using the mic jack for input, has anyone found a way around this hiccup?  I think there are a bunch of other 
inputs and output on the rear panel.
