Chris,
Might I suggest you spray a little "TRI-Flow" on the shaft. It is an
excellent penetrant and contains Teflon for lubrication. It does not gum up
like regular oil.
WD-40 works, but I don't recommend it because it becomes gummy in time.
Machine oil will also eventually gum up. Whale oil is an excellent
substitute for light machine oil because it does not Gum up. Whale oil is
used in 8-day and other wind-up mechanical clocks, like grandfather clocks.
