John, I found the rubber ducky antenna to be pretty much worthless for 
anything other than "around the hamfest" type chats, but with a small 
wire dipole you'll do amazingly well when the band is open.  And when 
I've taken my 817 portable with the little 3 element portable MFJ 6 
meter beam on an 8 foot mast, I work just about every station I hear.  
(Just maybe not on the first call!).  That's why 6 is "the magic band".
