Thanks to all for the replies on the FT-897. 
Yes I am aware of the mods and the rules, regulations and laws concerning transmitting on the frequencies mentioned. I too am a MARS op. and have been for many years. Since I do not own one of the FT-897's I thought that I would ask from those that do and have actually done the mod ---- what the true transmit range is after the mod? 
Some assumed that I was wanting to transmit there ---- just the opposite. I do not want to put the radios in the field if the mod will allow that. 
On some radios from various manufacturers, the mods will open up certain transmit frequency ranges while leaving others closed: an example is the Kenwood TS-2000.
