Hi John and gang...

I had a very similar problem, but on a different model rig.  It turned out to be the way current and voltage is "sensed" in the automatic swr monitoring circuitry.  

An easy way to see if this is what's going on in your case would be to add a piece (somewhere around 20 - 40 feet for 80M) of coax in series with the existing line anywhere between the rig and antenna.  That may move the nulls and nodes the sensing circuit sees back at the rig, and you might get full power back again. .
