Hi San,

>From the error description, you may not have the menus set up correctly in
the Field. Menu 7-9 must be set to 'Keyer" and Menu 4-9 (Exciter Drive
Power) to "HI". The error you describe is consistent with insufficient drive
power for tuning. The Quadra ATU requires approx. 75W drive to tune
correctly. The Band Data 2 cable must be wired correctly (it is already for
your MkV) and connected to the exciter's "Remote" jack.

Here is the setup procedure:

For non-Yaesu/VS exciters, here is the Quadra interface information:

http://www.ab4oj.com/quadra/interface.html

I have been using my Quadra with Icom exciters since 1998 - no problem ever.

See also http://www.ab4oj.com/quadra/main.html

F SET will work correctly if the exciter output is approx. 75W. It
configures the LPF for the new band, and moves the ATU to the stored match
point closest to the new frequency. I use F SET to effect band changes with
an Icom exciter.

Please let me know if the above info resolves the issue.

Cheers for now, 73,
Adam VA7OJ/AB4OJ

Subject: [Yaesu] Quadra tuner and Mark V Field

Does anyone know why the FT1000 Field can not use the Band Data 2 from
Quadra to the "remote" of the Field for using the tuner and tune features? I
found from the Product Reviews that the Field does NOT work like the Mark V
with this regard. My old Mark V 200 watt rig DID work ok with the Data 2
cable hooked to the "remote" and hitting "tune" worked beautifully for a low
SWR.. With the Field 100 watt radio I now have, pushing tune with tuner in
line gives a quick 1 second attempt and then the "error" screen comes up. It
is NOT an error for Hi SWR or Protect as explained in the manual, just says
"error".. Researching the Product Reviews shows the poor manual descriptions
of the button functions of the Quadra. A shame because you almost have to
sell the Quadra to a Yaesu FT1000 owner. Any "plug and play" ham would not
ever figure his way around this tuner! hi hi
The ONLY way to use the tuner of the Quadra with an FT1000 Field is to
NOT use the Band Data 2 at all. UNPLUG its "remote" connection to the xcvr
which normally keys the Mark V to send a carrier for the tuning when the
"tune" button is pushed.. Now, one must (1) push TUNER then (2) use keyer
for solid CW signal or use RTTY tone of about 70 watts, then (3) push TUNE
and the screen with the cap icons shows beautifully for full 5-6 seconds
while tuning occurs.. This is a little known 'quirk' of the Quadra, one of
many it seems. The F Set is another strange feature and not "per the
manual" description.
Hope this helps some of you...
