[Yaesu] VOX on the FT100D

I am looking at using the Yaesu FT100 on the digital modes using the mic jack-I know it has the mini DIN plug in the back for that, but I want to use the mic jack, long story.  Anyways, I was thinking of just using the audio in and the ground wires from the mic jack and then running VOX so I wouldn't have to do PTT switching.  Is it really this easy to use VOX thru the mic jack.  Can you just use those 2 leads, or is something else needed as well?
