[Yaesu] FT-900 Q

My Yaesu FT-900 has had two significant problems:

1) First, the connection fingers from the front panel module to the main assembly have been intermittent. I fixed this by using a super lubricant for gold contacts made by Caig Laboratories called "DeoxIT Gold". You can buy this in small containers, and, yes it cost about what gold does.

2) After several years of unuse, I connected the rig on my workbench, to use it for the latest contest. No audio came out of the speaker! I plugged an external SP-4 speaker into the rear jack, but no audio there either. I moved the speaker to the front Phone Jack and now have audio into the speaker, but I think the amplitude is a bit low. So, perhaps we have defective phone jacks as well?

Hopefully someone else might comment about the solution for item 2, above... particularly a fix for it, if not "just" bad connections at the jacks (Which may be corrected using Caig "DeoxIT", a solution for non-gold contacts).

Some years ago, I purchased a VX-5R hand held which had a similar problem with its external power connector jack. It would only run with the external supply connected, and it was intermittent I sent it back to Yaesu and they made a fix to it and a factory upgrade at the same time, and... I got it back within three weeks.

  Hi All,
I recently acquired a FT-900 for my vacation home. Excellent shape, seems to work fine. Had it upstate this weekend, only to find one of my coax supports broken, & the coax on the ground.......across a deer trail. Those hooves are might sharp & the coax is done......badly cut & full of water. No wonder it wouldn't tune.

Could someone familiar with this transceiver tell me what are the common issues with this rig. Any "must do" mods?

  tnx & 73,
  bob
