[Yaesu] FT100 history question

I wonder if someone on the list can help me with this
information:  The QST review of the Yaesu FT100 says
it debuted at the 1998 Dayton Hamvention.  Ok, but
when did it first hit the US market for actual sale? 
I don't think I have seen a model with a serial number
before 9, meaning that it first came out in 1999,
correct?
