Motorola has actually been in the direct amateur radio
business twice before. The first was in the late
1940s and early 1950s when they made a 10 meter mobile
AM station. Both the transmitter and receiver were
crystal controlled and in separate cabinets (i.e. the
old "twin coffin" design but smaller cabinets than the
FM two-way equipment).
The next time was in the late 1960s and early 1970s
when they marketed their VHF marine transceiver as the
Metrum 2-meter unit.
Of course they also built quite a number of Collins
designed R-390 series receivers for the military.

Looks like Moto will finally enter the ham radio
market if only by default! Will we soon see Moto
branded ham radios and Yaesu branded cell phones? I
bet they just stay the course. Why mess up a good
thing.
