[Yaesu] FT 950

75m is terrible tonight here so it's a good challenge for the FT950. I have
only used the manual for reference and not read it through so please keep
that in mind for this report.
The roofing filters seem to have no effect, not in any way. I'm even having
difficulty telling if they are functional at all!
Having the NB off does help get rid of splatter and using the 'combination'
of the shift and width controls does a decent job, as mentioned in the
manual 'hints'.
The noise filter (DNR) is disappointing so far, the resulting distortion on
any position past "1" is annoying but like I said conditions were
exceptionally bad tonight so high NR is needed to overcome.
I did get the NB set to do it's job but the setting was a higher number than
I initially set up, no problem there, it does the job fairly well. Now I've
lowered the NB # again to get rig of some of the minor distortion when it's
on. Looks like the NB or DNR menu selection are good candidates to set up on
the C.S. button for instant menu recall.
The DNF (auto notch) works great!
The contour is quite a challenge to set up in the menu to your liking. Once
it's set up, it does have some usefulness.
I'll try to get some of my menu settings out soon, probably on the FT-950
list unless wanted here. I'll reserve comparative judgments with other
radios I've owned for the moment (mark V's, ic-7000 and others), just
haven't had enough 'seat' time yet and then there are these terrible band
conditions!
I'm not going to put a lot of time into further adjustments other than
trying to figure out the roofing filters, until the DMU2000 arrives. I think
it will be useful in setup. Just got the base mic out and will try to set up
the menu for it next.

Just got mine out of the box! 1st few minutes impression... smooooth as
silk. I'm liking what I hear. I've briefly gotten into the menu and played
with the nb settings. Key down is 100+W. Everything looking like a winner so
far.
If you haven't heard, the DMU-2000 dropped in price. I sent for one today
from Ham Station (800) 729-4373 (because of Dan's reputation for honest fair
prices and return policies). Only talk to Dan the owner and tell him Marty
in Greenville sent you (maybe he'll do us both another favor :)

Anyone own one yet? How is it? I'm drooling for one and need some first hand
reviews.
