[Yaesu] FT847 - Serial number 8xxxxxxxx

The '8' indicates it was manufactured during 1998.
The next character, a letter, is the month of manufacture - but you must 
first subtract a bit (A is NOT January) - I forgot the magic decoder ring 
amount...   A=1, B-2, etc.  You subtract the magic number on the result is 
the month of manufacture from 1 to 12)

However, nothing indicates how long the radio was in a dealer's inventory 
before being sold.  In the early days of the 847, it was not uncommon for a 
radio to be in inventory for a year before being sold.  Manufacturing for 
the 847 stopped about a year ago, but they are still in demand for satellite 
work.  Seemingly, the only known inventory seemed to have been at UK 
dealers.. but that may have dried up by now.
