[Yaesu] ATAS-100 extended?

Has anyone had any experience or have any insight on extending the shaft
length below an ATAS-100 to make it 7 or 8 feet in overall and using it
with the FT-100D tuning protocol, as configured?  

I expect provisions would have to be made to decouple the cable from RF
at the base of the extended antenna, but that should not be too hard to
do.

It seems like that if such a modification could be accomplished, that it
would make a major improvement in the performance of the antenna.
