Not sure what your point is. SMAs are readily available from most of the
usual connector places. Digikey and others have them for about, or less,
than the price of a decent non-Asian-trash type N. Fragile?? Well, sure;
anything that small is going to be that much weaker, whaddaya expect?????
Everything's a compromise. You can almost always find someone at swap meets
who has short jumper cables from which you can salvage connectors. Or you
can use them as-is for small interconnects within your own projects. Hard
to do that with PL259s or type Ns. I've been using them for over 35 years
and can't rember ever crossthreading one. PL259s, you betcha. I'll agree
with you about high costs for adapters, though; but the same is true for
type N adapters although less so for PL259. But you can get adapters for
SMA to nearly anything else fairly easily, with sufficient gold in hand ;o\
Just be glad they didn't use SMBs or SMCs; coping with those would be a
REAL bitch.
