Mike,
I was told by a Yaesu tech a couple of years ago that the last of their
stock had gone out the door just a few months prior to my inquiry at a
price of about $250. He also told me that the original part had been a
special device that Motorola had made just for them and that it was not a
stock item with Motorola. I verified that. There are a couple of
transistors out there that will work in the radio at a reduced output.
This is due mainly to the fact that these transistors are designed to work
at 28 volts instead of the 13.8 the original part was designed for. There
were also some rumors that another semiconductor manufacturer was going to
build an exact replacement but I don't know if they ever did. For this
reason I have stayed away from FT-100s. In fact, I had another perfectly
good FT-100D that I sold because of the possibility of being stuck with a
radio with no output on VHF and UHF. I sold the one with the bad output on
eBay for a lot less than it would have brought in good condition. Good
luck with your search for a replacement. Happy New Year.
