Mike,
Don't know about the power on VHF or  you may have a problem with the short 
coax hanging of the back.
Maybe better  check the SWR.
As far as the heat, it does run warm even when just  receiving.
I installed 2 high CFM fans in the one I had and I wired up 1 to  run at half 
speed full time
I also removed the plastic the covered the holes  INSIDE the front top cover 
so the fans can pull in more air.
A few weeks ago  I was running through some old post here and I found that 
info on the  fans.
They were being sold by some girl and she sold me 4 for $14.99+  shipping.
The mod for the stock fans was to put a 50 ohm resistor in line and  go 
direct to 12 volts inside the rig.
You might finf the fan mods on  eham.

I never got a TCXO or  CW filter with mine and my rig was the last batch.
I now have 2 857-D rigs  and I feel their better and run much cooler.
