[Yaesu] VX5R transmit audio problem

I have a late serial number VX5R (3K range) so it
should have all of the updates and such done to it at
the factory. However, I seem to be having a problem
with the transmit audio. When I get on the local UHF
repeater people tell me that my transmit audio cuts in
and out. The carrier will stay, but the audio would
drop out. I have never really had those kinds of
reports before on a Yaesu HT, so not sure what is
going on, but here are some things I have tried:

1. Replaced the battery since the one I got with the
HT seemed like it wasn't holding a great charge.

2. Turned the deviation setting to half-deviation in
the menus, in case I was over deviating into the
repeater.

The problem still occurs, but I will mention that this
repeater uses a PL tone. I briefly got on a local 2
meter repeater that doesn't use a tone, and it seemed
to be working alright then. So, it could be the band,
the PL tones, or something completely different.

I called Yaesu tech support and they were absolutely
no help, other than talking to me like I was an idiot.

Anyone have any other ideas as to what could be wrong?
I would like to keep this as my primary HT, but would
have to replace it if this keeps up.
