I would check your audio level first before making any adjustments - you might only need to bump up the tone deviation and not audio in general.  You might want to get a service manual and see what adjustments are available.

Do any of you owners have any problems with the transmitted tone dropping out intermittently on the VX 6R especially on UHF? I have one apparently doing this and one of my friends has one doing the same thing. The symptom is audio problems with the audio dropping out every two or three words.
