[Yaesu] Yaesu FT736R- sudden loss of receive audio

My FT736R has suddenly lost it's receive audio. It is as if the squelch 
circuit were activated. It happened mid-QSO and of course, turning the 
squelch control full counter-clockwise does NOT restore the receive 
audio. When I turn the unit off and back on there is a momentary burst 
of band noise and signal, but this quits after less than a second. The 
S-Meter does fluctuate upward with signal. The green "busy" LED does 
light on either signal or with squelch counter-clockwise.

I have not tried an external speaker yet. I have tried headphones, and 
there is still no receive audio.

*Are there any known FT736 audio problems that I should look for?* I 
have the manuals and some technical skills. Suggestions will be appreciated.
