Thank you for the suggestion.
I found that eve-1.70 runs under wine (file edit only), and
VX commander does not.

This works well, though I don't yet have a reliably working interface
cable. (The one purchased from Radio Shack was completely non-functional.)
I have successfully used a chain including an rs232 <-> rs422 converter
and breadboarded 74LS03. I plan to build the 6-transistor model.
