[Yaesu] Yaesu FT80C question

I am new to the list, but have a question.  I just aquired a nice yaesu FT 80C, HF  transceiver.  It is programed for select frequencies in memory.  I want to use it as a ham tranceiver.  If I purchase a CAT controller, I presume that I can go where I want.  I have a Heath SB1400 with manual, while simular they are not exact.  Is their another way?  Any help would be appreciated.
