[Kenwood] Re: [Yaesu] Why are we so SWR-phobic

Every solid state medium wave AM broadcast rig I know of is designed to
trip off if the line vswr goes above 1.2:1. These are rigs that cost
anywhere from $15K to $250K. they are expensive and worth protecting.
However, I understand my Yaesu mk V PA costs $700 to replace, which to
me is a lot of money. I'd prefer too much vswr protection rather than
not enough. For me it's a nonissue anyway since I hardly ever use the
built in tuner since I run my exciters into various manual matching
networks all the time. the only difference between this, and running
a "boat anchor" is that my tank circuit is outboard; the boat anchor's
is between the high Z tube plate and the UHF jack on the back if the
rig. Either way you're adjusting caps and coil taps to make a tx work
with a mismatch.

I use a rig's tuner occasionally when I want it to be happy driving my
amp which has a tuned input that isn't always as close to 50 j0 as it
should be.
