[Yaesu] VX-2R antenna for AM/SW?

All,

I'm looking for ideas on an antenna for reception of AM and shortwave on my
VX-2R. I've been rummaging around the web for a couple of days but haven't
seen what I'm looking for. I like to take it with me when I'm hiking and
backpacking and a compact antenna that would improve reception on AM and SW
would be really cool. In the absence of a commercial product or a homebrew
design, I may try my hand at gutting an old AM radio for a ferrite rod
antenna.

Any thoughts on this?

Also, I'm a newbie to this list. Are there searchable archives anywhere?
Couldn't find any search feature on QTH.net...
