[Yaesu] FT-857 display: vertical stripes of blank space

The subject pretty much says it: I get vertical stripes in which there's 
nothing at all. This is in the 857 mobile rig; not the 897D shack rig. 

It's pretty obvious that they're from bad contact between the display in
the control head and whatever's driving it, rather than from something
actually having died, because they're not always in the same place.

Has anyone else ever had this problem? Has anyone got deep enough into the 
control head to determine if this is even fixable without eensy-weensy 
tools and a big stock of replacement parts? I know some of the conductive-
striped foam connectors are very fragile and install-once, but haven't got
inside this critter yet.
