[Yaesu] FT847 replacement

I hope none of the present crop of Yaesu mobile/portable/transportable
transceivers form the basis for the FT-847 satellite transceiver
replacement, as none of them can compete with the VHF/UHF performance of the
FT-847, even if satellite facilities are added, such as crossband operation,
full-duplex, VFO tracking, inverted tracking, etc.

The FT-847 was designed for weak signal VHF/UHF operation with its low-noise
preamplifiers and HEMT device in the UHF preamplifier, while the FT-897
et al are primarily HF radios. HF is clearly secondary in the FT-847, if
one considers some of the operational facilities and specifications of the
radio.

I know I will get the usual arguments that the FT-847 is a poor performer on
HF and anything can beat it hands down. That may be so in some instances,
but one must keep in mind that Yaesu intoduced the FT-847 as replacement
for the FT-736, which is a VHF/UHF satellite radio without HF capability.

It will be interesting to see whether Yaesu learnt from the FT-726-736-847
experience and rectify the shortcomings of the FT-847 in a new satellite
radio.

I still love my FT-847 in its role as a VHF/UHF all-mode radio alongside my
FT-1000MP-MkV.

My guess would be something on the FT897 platform but with full duplex added
for satellites. Maybe an FT867?
