I found a tip at www.mods.dk that worked for the Kenwood TM-331A I got
from ebaY with a dead battery. It should work for most others, too -
including HTs!

1. Get a coin-battery holder and battery to fit, #2032 is a common, 20mm
diameter. 3.0V lithium unit; most of these are comparable (check the
manual or service manual/parts list vs. Mouser/Digi-Key catalogs for
comparable sizes.

2. Carefully take the radio apart enough to get at your coin-battery.

3. Unsolder the nickel straps on the battery from the PCB.

4. Mount the holder on a scrap of perfboard (fold down the mounting tabs
to hold it, so you don't short to any structure).

5. Put enough small red/black wire on your holder to reach from
someplace convenient in the radio, to where the original was mounted,
without getting pinched.

6. Add a little "3M mounting square" (double-sticky foam patch.)

7. Double-check +/->to>red/black>to>+/-, usually +=top.

8. Wire it to the PCB in place of the original. The solder traces are
usually pretty big and easy.

9. Put the radio back together, and stick your new holder to the
convenient place (not covering heatsinks/adjustment points, etc), and
snap-in the new battery.

10. Enjoy having memories again!

All else aside, RF to the other fellow's antenna is what counts.
