[Yaesu] Audio settings for the FT857

I just got a used FT857 in on Friday (SN 2N range) and today while trying out 6 meters with a local friend, he said the audio sounded somewhat muffled. Tried some different proc and SSB gain settings which made it a little better, but he said it still wasn't as good as my other radios have been. The audio sounds fine on the local 2 meter repeater, though. I have the MH-31 hand mic, and had the processor on. What are the best settings to use for good audio? Are there any mods that need to be done, like removing the plastic baffle in the mic which was suggested for the FT1000D?

Or is this rig experiencing some of the 6 meter problems that have been written about before? And if so, how do you fix that?
