[Yaesu] FT 857D & ATAS120 Tuning

I recently purchased an 857D and the ATAS 120 antenna from HRO.  They are
installed in my 2005 Dodge Pickup.  When I first initialized the ATAS 120, it
would tune to the lowest SWR.  After making several band changes, I noticed that
when I was transmitting, the SWR indicator would flash on and off.  I changed
the meter mode to SWR and found it quite high.  In order to get it lower, I have
to manually tune the antenna.  After experimenting with the settings etc. I
finally decided to reset the entire radio to its original configuration and
start again. 

 

After the reset, I initialized the antenna again.  It tuned to the lowest SWR
until I turned the radio off.  About 4 hours later, when I powered the radio up
again, the tuning would stop as soon as the SWR indicator on the display went
out.  As I transmit, the SWR indicator again starts flashing and I have to
manually tune the antenna.  I reset the radio again, and the antenna seemed to
tune to the lowest SWR --- until I turn the radio off.  I'll experiment more
this weekend, but wondered if anyone else was experiencing these symptoms OR if
this was normal.
