For almost four years, W4RT Electronics has been installing the One-Board
Filter (OBF) in the FT-817 which allows FT-817 owners to enjoy having both
the CW and SSB Collins Mechanical Filters. The OBF utilizes Collins
Mechanical Filters that are the same as used in the optional Yaesu filters
for the FT-817. The bandwidth of the 7-pole CW filter is 500 Hz and the
10-pole SSB filter is 2.3 kHz. See eHam.com reviews at
http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1784.
The One-Board Filter has NOT been available for installation by FT-817
owners until NOW as a "do-it-yourself" option. For those that want the
One-Board Filter installed by W4RT Electronics, that option remains
available. In other words, both DIY and W4RT installed versions are
available. This is especially important to hams not located in the USA
since the shipping issues are significant.
Installation is not trivial, so you should be confident that you have the
skills, tools (SMT level), and experience needed to do the job correctly.
Please read the OBF Instruction Manual (on the W4RT web site or at
http://www.w4rt.com/obf/OBF_FT-817_Manual.pdf) BEFORE ordering to
understand what is involved and the terms. The total difference in price
of DIY and W4RT installed is about $50. No technical assistance is
provided if you DIY, so be sure before you attempt an installation.
DIY price is $239 + S&H. W4RT installed is $269 + S&H and turnaround is
almost always just one business day.
The One-Board Filter for DIY is available now and will be at Dayton too.
