Your guess is likely right on target. I own several FT-530's and have serviced many. It's not an easy job because everything is tiny but if you are willing to tackle it and have the right tools for the job then I strongly suggest checking the DC jack. It likely is not making connection back to battery when the coaxial plug is removed. Could be oxidation or simply the spring metal contact is not closing when the plug is removed.
One last area to check is the connection between your battery's terminals and the radio's terminals when the battery is attached. Some aftermarket battery packs would have a problem after some use. Could be the battery pack's terminals simply are not touching the radio's contacts. As I recall there's little more in that circuit. I still have a service manual and will look it over.
