[Yaesu] Interesting FT100 problem

John,

Since you say this doesn't occur on your dipole at all, but is DOES
happen when you're turning your rotor, it sounds like you've got a loose
coax connection up on your yagi.

I received a used FT100 yesterday that has developed a
problem that I don't recall ever seeing discussed. It
is a plain FT100, serial number in the 9D range, and
it doesn't appear to have had any grounding mod done
to it (but it isn't showing any hi swr problems). I
did tighten up the circuit board screws when I had the
case open, though.

On 20 meters today I noticed that the receive would
occasionally drop out. It would get very quiet, but
pushing the PTT button would bring receive back to
normal, which suggests that it is a relay problem.
Changing band or mode did not bring the receive back.
I finally traced the receive dropping out to turning
the rotor. It didn't make the receive drop out all of
the time, but the receive wouldn't drop out unless the
rotor was turning, or at the end of the rotation. I
have a radio shack TV rotor, and a Mini Products Mini
Quad for the higher bands. This problem would not
occur if I was on the dipole instead, but it would
also occur if I rotated the UHF antenna, which also
uses a Radio Shack TV rotor. I have had several FT100
radios before, and never had this problem. I recently
had a couple of Icom 706 models in this exact same
setup without any problems. Just this FT100.

Any ideas or suggestions as to what is going on? I
have a week to return the radio for a refund, but like
it and would like to continue to use it, although it
will mainly be for VHF/UHF work.
